Eating Out Without Blowing Your Progress 🍽️🐝

Let’s be honest—eating out is one of life’s pleasures. Whether it’s a family celebration, a meal with friends, a date night or simply a night off from cooking, food is about much more than calories.

The good news? You don’t have to avoid restaurants or takeaways to lose weight. With a little planning and a few smart choices, you can enjoy eating out while continuing to make progress towards your goals.

1. Don’t Save Your Calories

One of the biggest mistakes people make is skipping breakfast and lunch because they’re going out in the evening.

This often backfires.

Arriving at a restaurant starving makes it much harder to make mindful choices and can lead to overeating.

Instead, eat balanced meals during the day that include plenty of protein, vegetables and fluids. You’ll arrive satisfied rather than ravenous.

2. Look at the Menu Before You Go

Most restaurants publish their menus online.

Take five minutes to decide what you’d like before you arrive. It removes the pressure of making a quick decision when everyone else is ordering—and helps you avoid being tempted by everything on the menu.

3. Think Protein First

Building your meal around protein helps keep you fuller for longer.

Great choices include:

  • Grilled chicken
  • Steak
  • Fish
  • Turkey
  • Prawns
  • Lean burgers
  • Tofu or other high-protein vegetarian dishes

Then add vegetables or salad and choose a sensible portion of potatoes, rice or other carbohydrates if you’d like them.

4. Watch Hidden Calories

It’s often not the main meal that catches us out—it’s the extras.

Think about:

  • Creamy sauces
  • Garlic bread
  • Cheese toppings
  • Extra dressings
  • Butter
  • Large portions of chips

You don’t have to avoid them completely, but choosing just one favourite treat instead of several can make a big difference.

5. Slow Down

Restaurants are designed to be enjoyed.

Put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls, chat with the people you’re with and really taste your food.

It takes around 20 minutes for your brain to recognise you’re full.

6. You Don’t Have to Finish Everything

Restaurant portions are often much larger than we need.

Remember:

  • Stop when you’re comfortably full.
  • Leave food if you’ve had enough.
  • Share a dessert.
  • Ask for a takeaway box if available.

You have paid for the meal whether you finish it or not.

7. Drinks Count Too

Fancy coffees, cocktails, sugary soft drinks and alcohol can add hundreds of calories before you’ve even started eating.

Good alternatives include:

  • Water
  • Sparkling water
  • Diet soft drinks
  • Slimline mixers
  • A small glass of wine instead of several drinks

8. Enjoy It Without Guilt

One meal will never ruin your progress.

What matters is what you do most of the time—not one lunch, one takeaway or one celebration.

Enjoy the occasion, make the best choices you can, and then simply get back to your usual routine at your next meal.

No punishment.
No guilt.
No “I’ll start again on Monday.”

Just consistency.
